10 Maine Traffic Laws You Need to Know

Maine has strict guidelines for traffic safety including cell phone restrictions, an extended three-stage program for new drivers, and special rules for mature drivers. To make it easy for you to stay abreast of these laws we’ve created this list of the 10 top laws you should know if you are driving in the state.

Under primary enforcement laws, hand-held and hands-free cell phone use is banned for all drivers with a learner’s permit or intermediate license. Text messaging is banned for all drivers.

All children weighing under 40 pounds must be secured in a child safety seat, while children weighing between 40- and 80-pounds who are up to 8 years old must use a booster seat so that adult seat belts fit properly and safely. Those children aged 11 and under and weighing under 100 pounds should ride in rear seats whenever possible. The maximum fine for a first offense is $50 though it jumps to $250 for a subsequent offense.

Maine has not defined drug-impaired driving laws and marijuana is decriminalized and legal for medicinal use.

Drunk drivers can expect to have their license suspended for 90 days on a first offense and their vehicle confiscated. Ignition interlock devices may be required.

Teens can get their learner’s permit age 15, their intermediate license at age 16, and full driving privileges at age 16 years and six months.

You must wear a motorcycle helmet if you are under age 18 or have been licensed under one year. Bicyclists must wear a helmet if they under age 16.

Mature drivers between the age of 40 and 61 must have their vision tested at every other license renewal, those aged 62 to 64 must have a vision test at every renewal, and those over the age of 65 must renew every four years.
