To help reduce the number of fatalities occurring on New Jersey roadways, the state has implemented numerous traffic laws that are recommended by the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. These are the 10 rules of the road you need to know if traveling through the state.

Under primary enforcement laws, cell phone use (hand-held and hands-free) is banned for all drivers, as is text messaging.

Aggressive driving violations are charged under Careless Driving, Operating in an Unsafe Manner, or other laws at the discretion of the law enforcement officer.

Children under age two, weighing under 30 lbs. must be secured in a rear-facing infant child seat; those over age 4 and 40 lbs. are to be a child car seat; children less than 8 years and 57 inches must be in a booster seat; and those over 8 years and 57 inches are to be secured in the rear seat when possible. The fine for failing to do so is $75.

Anyone driving while intoxicated will have their license suspended for at least three months, and will have to attend the Intoxicated Driver Resource Center plus any criminal penalties.

The Graduated Driver’s License Program allows teens to get their learner’s permit at age 16, their provisional license at 16, and full privileges at 18.

All motorcycle riders must wear a helmet. All bicycle riders under age 17 must wear a helmet.

Law enforcement conducts sobriety checkpoints up to two times each month.

The penalties for all moving violations are enhanced to double the original penalty in work zones.
