If you are a new driver, an adult driver, or someone who is passing through, there are traffic laws you should know that are unique to the state. Though all states have traffic laws, they are implemented differently. Here are the nine you need to know for Nebraska.

Cell phone use is banned for drivers under the age of 18 who have a learner’s permit or intermediate license. Text messaging is prohibited for all drivers in the state.

Children aged five years or younger must be secured in a child safety restraint. Adult seatbelts are permissible for children age six and up. The fine for a first offense is $25 plus points on your record.

Drunk drivers have their license suspended for 90-days for a first offense, and ignition interlock devices are mandatory for all convictions.

Nebraska has a graduated license program that gives new drivers two years of practice before they receive an unrestricted license. The program begins at age 15 and ends with full privileges at age 17.

All motorcycle riders must wear a helmet.

Mature drivers must renew their license every 5 years, and cannot renew by mail upon reaching the age of 72.

Seat belts must be worn by any passenger in the front seat. The fine for failing to do so is $25.00.
