Idaho Car Accident Statistics

Idaho Car Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Idaho has witnessed a decrease in traffic fatalities over a ten-year period, from 275 deaths in 2005 to 186 deaths in 2014. Unfortunately, negligent driving behaviors, such as speeding and driving while intoxicated, continue to harm too many innocent people each year.

Drunk Driving

In 2014, some 231 drivers were involved in fatal accidents that killed nearly two hundred people. Of those drivers-

  • Two were under the age of 15
  • 27 were under the age of 21
  • 99 had a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or higher
  • 72 of those drunk motorcycle and motor vehicle operators were killed in fatal accidents
  • 27 survived the crash, but killed either their passengers or someone else

As much as the state has done to change the most dangerous driving behaviors, operators driving over the speed limit or too fast for the conditions of the road were to blame for the deaths of 48 people across Idaho in 2014, down from 95 deaths in 2005.

Helmet and Seatbelt Usage

Data from the NHTSA shows that of the 130 passenger vehicle occupant deaths in 2014, only 61 drivers were wearing restraints at the time of the accident. The agency estimates that if all occupants had been wearing their seatbelts, another 33 lives could have been saved.

The agency also reports that of the 25 motorcycle riders who lost their lives in 2014, about 15 were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. An estimated six additional lives could have been saved if the riders had been helmeted at the time of the crash.

Pedestrians and cyclists face serious dangers on Idaho roadways. In fact, two cyclists and 13 walkers and joggers lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents in 2014.

A closer examination of these crash statistics shows that of the 186 fatal crashes and collisions –

  • 133 involved the vehicle leaving the roadway
  • 126 involved a single vehicle
  • 85 involved a vehicle rollover
  • 48 involved at least one speeding vehicle
  • 32 involved an intersection
  • 23 involved a large truck
