Indiana Car Crash Statistics
In 2014, the latest year of complete statistics, there were 705 fatal accidents that caused the deaths of 746 people. While the vast majority of crash victims were in passenger vehicles, far too many involved the most vulnerable roadway users, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists. In fact,
- 291 victims were in passenger cars
- 198 were in pickup trucks and SUVs
- 14 were in large trucks
- 101 were riding motorcycles
- 17 were walkers, joggers, and hikers
- 12 were riding bicycles *source
About 381 people died in single-vehicle crashes and 365 more died in multi-vehicle collisions, and 384 of those who were killed were drivers. Unfortunately, at least 203 of those drivers had a blood alcohol concentration 0.08 or higher when they crashed.
Data for seatbelt use shows that more work needs to be done to reach 100 percent usage rates. Sadly, 190 of the 497 passenger vehicle occupants who died were not wearing seat belts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that seat belts saved the lives of 348 people and could have saved 65 more if all passenger vehicle occupants would have worn restraints.
Pedestrians, Motorcyclists, and Bicyclists
Pedestrians are the among the most vulnerable of roadway users, and everyday across the country, According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data Institute, 78 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2014.
