Montana Crash Statistics

Montana Crash Statistics

According to the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of fatal traffic fatalities occurring in Montana fell from a high of 264 deaths in 2006 down to a ten-year low of 192 in 2014.

The majority of fatal crash accidents occurred in passenger vehicles on rural roadways. If we take a closer look at the types of accidents that caused these fatalities, we see they involved certain factors:

  • Vehicle departed the roadway – 145 fatalities
  • Single vehicle crashes – 137 fatalities
  • Vehicle rollover – 104 fatalities
  • At least one speeding driver – 52 fatalities
  • Intersection traffic – 19 fatalities
  • Large trucks – 12 fatalities

Of the 145 people who died in passenger vehicle deaths-

  • 54 were in cars
  • 47 were in pickup trucks
  • 35 were in light utility trucks
  • 9 were in vans

Unfortunately, only 40 of these passengers were wearing their seatbelt. The NHTSA estimates that if all vehicle occupants would wear their seatbelts any time they are in a moving vehicle an additional 38 lives could have been saved.

Motorcycle fatalities fell from a ten-year of 36 to 23 in 2014, and more than half those riders were not wearing their helmets. The NHTSA estimates that helmets saved the lives of six riders, and could save an additional five lives if all riders wore them every time they rode.

Montana implemented the Graduated Driver’s License program, which gives new drivers more time to practice and gain experience behind the wheel before getting full privileges. This program aims to decrease the number of new driver fatal accidents, and the number of drivers under age 21 involved in fatal accidents has fallen from 35 in 2005 down to 26 in 2014.

While the rate of fatal accidents has fallen across the country, the rate of pedestrian deaths has not, including in Montana. While the number of pedestrian/motor vehicle fatalities fell 13 to 10 over ten years, these deaths rose as high as 24 and fell only as low as eight over that same period.
