Nebraska Fatal Crash Statistics
While the overall number of traffic fatalities fell in Nebraska between 2005 and 2014, per year data shows a different story. In fact, while fatalities fell from the ten-year high of 276 to 225, these numbers actually reflect an increase from a 2011 low of 181 deaths.
The state adopted the Graduated Driver’s License system for new drivers to give them more time to learn safe driving skills. The efficacy of the program is reflected in the decrease of your drivers involved in fatal accidents. While the number of fatalities fell from 54 to 34 over the ten-year period, the number of drivers under the age of 15 who are involved in these types of crashes fell from four to two, but rose from zero in 2013.
Unfortunately, of the 183 passenger vehicle occupants that died in 2014, about 95 were not wearing their seatbelts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 44 additional lives could have been saved if all passengers wore their restraints every time they get in vehicle.
Other negligent driving behaviors include drunk driving and speeding. While fatalities related to these behaviors have fallen, there’s far more that needs to be done. Alcohol-related fatalities fell from 74 to 60 over ten years, but rose a 2011 low 45. Speed-related fatalities also fell from 51 to 49, rising from a low of 30 in 2009.
Aside from alcohol and speed, the types of crashes that took lives in Nebraska in 2014 include (fatalities in parenthesis):
- Single-vehicle accidents (116)
- Crashes involving large trucks (52)
- Rollover accidents (94)
- Roadway departures (137)
