Vermont Fatal Accident Statistics

Vermont Fatal Accident Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the core outcome measures for traffic safety from 2006 and 2015. According to this data, fatal accidents have decreased over the analyzed period, however, these deaths increased from 2014 to 2015.

Traffic deaths fell from 87 in 2006 to 57 in 2015 but increased from 44 the year prior. Of these fatalities, 34 were occupants of passenger vehicles. Unfortunately, 17 were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. The NHTSA estimates that seat belts have saved 19 lives and could have saved 5 more if all vehicle occupants wore their restraints every time they traveled.

Motorcycle fatalities increased over the ten-year period from a low of 6 in 2010 to a high of 11 deaths in 2012 and 2015. Fortunately, most riders wear their helmets in Vermont, as shown by the low number of unhelmeted rider fatalities. Data shows that motorcycle accident fatalities fell from 4 in 2006 to zero in 2015.

The vast majority of drivers involved in traffic deaths are over the age of 21, possibly due to the state’s implementation of the Graduated Driver’s License program, which gives new driver’s extra time to develop safe driving skills before getting full licensure. Only 5 drivers under the age of 21 were involved in fatal accidents, falling from a high of 14 in 2006.

While more people are walking and jogging every day across the country, in Vermont, the number of those people being killed in motor vehicle accidents decreased from a high of 10 in 2012 to 5 in 2015, after increasing from zero deaths in 2006.

Speeding and drunk driving continued to be problem areas, even though the number of deaths involving these factors fell over the ten-year period. Speed-related fatalities fell from a high of 33 in 2006 to a low of 15 in 2014 only to increase to 21 in 2015. Alcohol-involved deaths jumped from 8 in 2014 to 15 in 2015, after falling from 26 in 2006.
