West Virginia Fatal Accident Statistics

West Virginia Fatal Accident Statistics

West Virginia experienced a decrease in fatal traffic accidents from the ten-year period between 2006 and 2015, with deaths falling from 410 to 268 respectively. In fact, the state saw a decrease in nearly all core outcome measures.

Of all fatalities in 2015, about 192 were passenger vehicle occupants. Unfortunately, 99 of these occupants were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that seatbelts saved the lives of 100 people, and another 23 could have been saved if all vehicle occupants would wear their restraints every time they traveled.

Over the analyzed time period, motorcyclist fatalities rose to a high of 40 deaths and fell to a low of 24 deaths before increasing again to 32 deaths. Of these, seven riders were not wearing their helmets at the time of the crash, a decrease from the high of 14 in 2012, but an increase from the low of 5 riders in 2009.

Alcohol and speeding remained troublesome, though fatalities involving alcohol fall from a high of 138 in 2007 to a low of 71 in 2015. Speed-related fatalities fall from a high of 144 in 2012 to a decade low of 66 in 2014 and again in 2015.

There were about 355 drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2015 in West Virginia, and the vast majority of those drivers were adults. Only 28 drivers under the age of 21 were involved in accidents where someone died, a significant decrease from the ten-year high of 69 drivers.

While most states experienced an increase in pedestrian deaths, the types of deaths fell in West Virginia, from a high of 31 deaths in 2012 to the low of 19 in 2015. While more people are walking, jogging to work and around town, motor vehicle accidents involving them, and people standing at bus stops, and sitting on benches, decreased.
